Dear Mr. Wallace,
Checking in on your Facebook fan page reminded me that today is your birthday. Posted there were notes of happiness and notes of sadness. There were lyrics from a song that made a person think of you. Someone even posted a joke: “How many DFW fans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?” The punchline was footnoted, as it should be.
It’s obvious by the postings on the fan page and by 8,000+ fans who belong that you touched many lives. Mine included. Reading your work has caused me to view the world around me and those who inhabit it a little differently. Your writing has certainly fed my sarcasm and cynicism, but it has also helped me to peel back the surface and see people and situations for what they truly are. For that I am thankful.
Happy birthday, David, wherever you are.
